The Barcelona-based pharmaceutical multinational with total revenues of €1,407MM in 2014 (company annual report) has welcomed GEMOS (Global Executive Master in Operations and Supply Chain Management) in their Sant Andreu de la Barca plant. This plant is one of the three production plants of Almirall that deliver products to 31 countries across the globe.

image001The Sant Andreu plant is a key provider of products as varied as liquids for the Dermatology line, inhalation devices for the respiratory line (the rights to their respiratory franchise are recently sold in a complex transaction to the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca), and tablets for other therapeutic areas such as gastrointestinal and central nervous system.

A highlight of the factory tour was the possibility to observe the complete process in all its steps from storage of raw materials, to material selection, product transformation, quality control, and subsequent storage and dispatching. We saw state of the art technology at work when drying powders, compressing pills, and filling the respiratory devices. We also saw the fully automated warehouse for storage and picking of all raw materials, components, materials and final products. Besides the physical goods flows, the tour included references to the information flows that triggered the different decisions taken at the plant level.

Almirall forms part of the GEMOS´ corporate advisory board, an international consultancy committee with the aim of keeping the content and frame of the Global Executive Master in Operations and Supply Chain Management in line with business reality. It is composed of independent business professionals from global companies that meet regularly and maintain contact with participants and alumni. Other participants in this board stem from Privalia, Port of Barcelona, Luxottica, Barilla, and GS1-Italy.
